This was our first wildlife in Glacier National Park and it was fabulous. This is the Hidden Lake hike, and although still snow covered, we hiked to the overlook and saw some goats….this guy was real close and the others moving to the hilltops. Very cool….
Three great hikes in three days…Hidden Lake Overlook, St. Mary and Virginia Falls and Avalanche Lake. We were here over the Fourth of July weekend so had some crowds, but we managed to score parking easily the last two hikes and they were divine. Going to the Sun Road was so impressive especially when you realize they were building it in the 1930’s….Logan Pass, the Weeping Wall, Bird Woman Falls and both St. Mary Lake and Lake McDonald were beautiful stops along the way.
Stopped in the Lake McDonald Lodge at the end of the first day because, well…it’s an old time lodge. Loved the decor, the mountain vibe and caught some good shots of the park’s Jammers’ (oldest motorcars used in national parks). Another lodge on the list for a return trip….
If you haven’t been to Glacier in awhile, you may not know that you need a reservation to go on the Going to the Sun Road if you’re coming in from the West entrance between 6am and 3pm. When I realized this last spring and got on Recreation.gov, all the dates we would be here were sold out. I was bummed out, and thought we’d just have to enter through St. Mary entrance, but realized they release more spots the night before at 7:00 MST. With sketchy wifi it was tricky, but with persistence I was able to get two days entrance that way.
A few last additions….a few more friends we found in the park, a stop in West Glacier and the Virginia Falls real deal…
