You know you’re in the midwest when….

We are staying at Straits State Park in St. Ignace MI and it is a cute little state park with great access to Lake Huron and the Mackinac Island ferries. The park has a trail system taking you to bridge overlooks and the lake and is a nice place to settle for a few days.

The big day was Mackinac Island which Tim had been to but I had never seen. The descriptors we got before we made the trek were all over the place….

a) dreamy

b) charming

c) all fudge and horseshit

d) overly crowded

e) darling

f) dated.

The answer is:

g) All of the above!

The town:

We walked all along the boardwalk to Arch Walk and back…great morning with a little cloud cover so not so bad. Beautiful scenery and gardens

The Fort:

We checked out the fort and saw the cannon shooting. Not sure who chooses to spend their summer dressed up in late 1800’s military attire and give tours to crabby, hot tourists, but…bless their hearts. We were impressed with how well the fort had been preserved and its history.

The Grand hotel:

Thought about watching Somewhere in Time before we hit the island but didn’t get around to it. Another notch on the cool, classy, old hotels tour and it delivered. We wandered through the lobby, parlor, and up to the Cupola Bar for a Cosmopolitan where we met a darling staff member who had spent her winter season at Stein Erikson lodge. She loved Utah and it was fun to chat with her…Didn’t get to dive into the Esther Williams pool and do my routine because they were checking wristbands, but next time…

We hit the front porch to rock a bit and then grabbed a horse carriage taxi back to town. Loved Horns Bar and Grill for lunch and made it off the island without an ounce of fudge. New shoes, yes….fudge, no. Priorities.

Hanging low today…bike ride and farmers market in our future and then Traverse City tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Thanks to the St. Ignace Public Library for their wifi hospitality….
