Although most of the rooms in the mansion were off limits due to HVAC restoration, we did see a few, but spent most of our time walking the grounds which were lovely. I loved the wharf and imagined the comings and goings on the Potomac…The Washington’s owned some 14k acres and over 300 slaves
( some of whom he granted freedom in his will but only after they continued to serve Martha until her death 🙁 ). His will also called for a better tomb for his family which is why you see two.
Stayed at a beautiful state park, Pohick Bay, which was full of trees all still lit by autumn colors…and then hit the road to the Shenandoah Valley to see the NP and drive Skyline Drive. Virginia is so beautiful with its rolling hills, farmland, country roads and quiet pastures. Never been here before; it’s quite a treat. Next up….Monticello.
